Lessons learned today:
- While Red Fox left our chickens alone when they free roamed a bit last weekend, he is not to be trusted. He eventually found the game of “chase the chicken” to be too tempting to pass by. Chickens are all safe and accounted for and Red Fox is not on my list of “favorites” today by a long shot.
- I really, really, really, really, REALLY need to make sure the gas ignites when I turn a burner on. Today I turned it on and went outside to do yard work while the kids watched a movie. An HOUR later I smelled gas outside. Either it never ignited or it blew out or something but the house was full of gas. I don’t know how in the world the kids were okay….. we spent the next few hours outside and got pizza for supper. I still can’t beleive what a close call it was.

OMGosh! That was a close call- glad everyone is okay. That article about raw milk was pretty interesting too.

If it helps ease the panic Erin’s had some adjusting to do with gas. I still remember during Ivan, when we had no power, she tried to light to stove to make lunch. Well, our stove is an electric ignition so, of course, it won’t light on its own without power. She had a mini-panic and wondered how we would cook. I simply walked over, pulled out the lighter and manually lit the burner. In her cute way she went “oh…”
Something that you might want to invest in, now that you’re on gas, is a carbon monoxide detector. They can be lifesavers if something ever goes wrong because, odds are, you will not find out otherwise before it’s too late. Oddly enough, I would avoid First Alert (too sensative) and go with Kidde. Get a battery powered model and put one on each floor of your house (CO1 is lighter than air)

You know…we have a detector! I wonder now why it never went off. It’s a plug in and our power wasn’t off. We need one downstairs though. Thanks for the tip!

We prefer the plug in ones too, although I can see it’s drawbacks now that I think about it. We have ours in the basement by the furnace- it’s the only thing in our house that is run by a fuel so we only have one. Our stove and hot water are electric.
