Thanksgiving At Our House
It’s cold and clear and sunny and the smell of wood smoke is in the air: perfect weather for Thanksgiving!
We’ve got my sis and bil coming in tomorrow mid-day, Grandma and Papa by evening, and we’ll do dinner on Friday. With work schedules flexibility was necessary.
Our menu:
Turkey, dressing, gravy.
Mashed potatoes
Roasted root veggies
cran apple sauce (cold relish sort of dish)
Butternut puree
Spinach Pear salad
either green beans with almonds and bacon or green bean casserole
yeast biscuits
French silk and pumpkin pie
This year I’m going to brine the bird before roasting and roast the carcass before making stock. The biscuits, French Silk pie, and butternut dish are all new recipes.
We are slowly going about getting stuff cleaned up, not feeling in any particular hurry, and enjoying the cozy days. We’ll gather leaves for a decorating project later and make chex mix.
Tomorrow morning we are going to church, early in the morning, at St. Anne’s Orthodox. I’m looking forward to starting my day with worship; it will be the first time we ever did such a thing on Thanksgiving and it feels excitingly appropriate.
If anyone wants to share what’s going on at their house, please comment or send links to your own blogs. I hope everyone has a blessed day, no matter how different they all may look!

Our tradition has changed over the course of the past few years but one thing has always been the same … every kid(and usually the adults) who comes to our table gets to name one thing that “it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving Dinner without”! And meals are planned around this. Kinda long story how this evolved. We’ve had various guest over the course of our Thanksgivings, but some of my favorite new recipes come from asking this question.
We will be having:
Turkey (brined as well because Randy wanted something a little different this year …)
mashed potatoes(for AJ)
baked sweet potatoes(for me)
traditional cornbread dressing(for Richard)
green beans(just ’cause)
tomato/red onion salad(I think this will be a nice addition in color and freshness)
cranberry stuff … not exactly sauce, not exactly relish(for Thomas)
beef and noodles(for AJ, because our gg always m ade them and can’t anymore … and I’m getting a lesson in making them from scratch)
deviled eggs(I don’t know for whom or why … I think they go to the bottom of the list)
yeast rolls(new recipe)
pecan pie
pumpkin pie
Tonight we eat leftover Spanikopita or meatloaf and breakfast tomorrow will be Shug’s Coffee Cake recipe from a friend!
Blessings as you start your day in corporate worship! I hope that I remember tomorrow morning to do the same thing individually instead of hitting the floor running!

Well! Our Thanksgiving will be very different tomorrow! We are being adopted by two different friends, at noon we will be feasting with one set of friends and their HUGE family group-then later in afternoon we will go to another friend’s to share dessert and games with their family! We are excited to have a fun day planned and to be included.
I am making sooooo many desserts! Two cheesecakes, a banana pudding(did you know ‘Nilla wafers have trans fat in them?), and a Texas Chocolate Cake!!!!! I am also bringing one of our fav’s for the meal- brocolli/cheese/ritz crackers/buttery thing. It is so goooood but I only make it once or twice a year…for obvious reasons.
Hope you have a special Thanksgiving!

We’re hosting a four-family get-together. We all enjoy each others’ company, have two young children (in fact, come to think of it, there’s one girl among the eight kids!), and our extended families are ever so far away and none of us travel for this holiday.
Anyway, tomorrow afternoon we’ll have a houseful. I hope by that time all of my side dishes will be in the fridge ready to be popped into the oven when the turkey is done roasting, and I’ll be able to knit, talk, and perhaps even play board games before getting the tables ready for feasting. Thanksgiving will be a good day. This evening we’ll do some Thanksgiving reading and say a prayer or two. Perhaps before our guests arrive tomorrow I will have pressed a few brain cells into service and had a good idea for a thanks-giving sort of thing we could all do while we’re gathered. Hmmm.

I am LOVIN’ hearing how you all are spending your holiday! Thanks so much for leaving such great comments.
Hey Amy…what’s Shug’s Coffee Cake?
Barbara, your day sounds so organized :-). I love that you’ll have time to relax and relate as you get everything together.
Leigh, say it isn’t so about the nillas!!! I may have to look and see if there is a variety of them at the hfs. In the summer especially we eat a lot of banana pudding!

Oh, it all sounds SOOOOOO warm and aromatic! The scent of peanut butter pie is currently wafting through my house… I can’t wait to smell turkey, too!
I detailed the outlook of our Thanksgiving at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/QueenoftheHill/243422/. Best wishes, Mrs. Sixredheads.

I am reading about all my friend’s meals before preparing mine. Oh wait–*I* don’t cook Thanksgiving dinner–Dr. H. does!! OK, I do make the pies, but he is the chief cook and organizer. We don’t usually host Thanksgiving; it’s usually at my third brother’s home. But this year they went to Kansas to the in-laws, so we are more than happy to host. My second brother and his wife and one stray son of the third brother are coming, and then some lovely orphaned friends are coming for dessert with cheesecake and TRANS-FAT laden banana pudding…. But I am procrastinating. I have a pie to make and a bathroom to clean! Have a blessed day!
