I need a Carnival of Ovenless Meals….

Here’s the challenge: I have no working oven. Due to time and money contraints, it’s not likely to be fixed until after our trip to visit my family next week/Easter/pascha. I also have no working grill; won’t be fixed until the same time for the same reasons.

I need meal ideas! I miss, miss, miss my home baked bread. I miss pizza. Quiche. Lasange. Etc, Etc.  I can make pancakes, waffles, tortillas, flatbread, etc but the challenge seems to be in changing my thinking to remember this kind of thing. I start making cookies or a cake or roasted chicken and then remember halfway in that I can’t cook it the way I’ve started preparing it.

So hit me mercilessly with menu options please! I have a conventional toaster, not a toaster oven. And no microwave. people do eat quite well in other areas of the world without these things so I know it’s gotta be possible.

Oh and, the letter “p” has not returned; I’m cutting/pasting! My great thanks to those who suggested that option!

I so rarely use my oven that I think if it went out I wouldn’t know about it! I cook most things on the stovetop:

    Fried chicken, or fish
    sauteed veggies
    Pancakes and bacon
    Omelets
    Quesadillas
    spaghetti
    soup
    chinese stirfry over rice

Is that the kind of stuff you’re meaning?

If you’re dying to make bread…make donuts! No one will fault you for that! :-)

You could always breakdown and use a pressure cooker, but I think a crock pot is more up your alley. Do your southwest sloppy joes. That is all I can think of right now. But I really like the crock pot idea and you could probably get one relatively cheap seeing that I don’t think you have one.

    Tally’s Mexican

In pot, saute hamburger with salt & pepper. Drain. Add l can tomato soup, l can rotel tomatoes, l can ranch style beans. Heat till bubbly. Serve over fritos. Top with grated cheddar, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, green onions. EASY!!

All kinds of breakfast dinners. We love scrambled eggs, ham, bell peppers & onions, rolled up in a flour tortilla and topped with cheese and picante sauce.

    Soups and grilled cheese sandwiches

    Cold Soups…Avocadoe is yummy

    Layered Salads

    Susan :-)

Cool! You guys are fast!! I do indeed have a crock pot but we rarely eat with it. I use it to keep things warm at potlucks! I have few ideas that use whole foods that use one that a stove top can’t do as well. If you’ve got ‘em, send ‘em on! Susan, your Tally’s mexican is similar to my Texas Joes but that they have also have beans in them. Yum! I’d forgotten about them. Beth, donuts are going on the menu!! The kids will LOVE them. I even have a good buttermilk recipe! :-)

Frittatas? I think if you put the lid on at the end of cooking it will let the top finish cooking (normally you finish it off in the … oven). You can put different veggies in there, saute them, pour beaten eggs (and milk?) over the veggies and let it sit. I usually re-look up Frittata recipes on my favorite recipe website and then go from there (just to remember basics).

That’s about all I can think to the many suggestions (and it’s really just a twist on an omelette).

I use my crockpot almost everyday. I put almost all my meals, (stews, chili, beans, soups, roasts, chicken, cakes, etc) in the crockpot. Put it in and don’t touch until dinner time. Google_crockpot meals and see what you come up with. or Try the below.

Chili, soups of any kind, pan-fried beef or fish. After thinking about these, I reaized how little I use my oven as well! We actually cooked on a double hot plate for 8 months when we first moved in our shell of a house. There was no 220 power, therefore no dryer or oven!
And, oh! What about cooking your bread in an iron skillet on the stove top. I know that the boy scouts in troop 442 have bread/rolls cooked over the fire in an iron skillet with a lid. You just have to keep the heat really low.
And of course there are always lentil and cheese tortillas, with fresh guacamole and tomatoes: yum! Just had them yesterday!:)
    Good luck!

Do some pit cooking. Dig a hole and line it with rocks. Look it up online - could be really interesing.

Red beans and rice with or without sausage. Sometimes we use the Zataran’s mix purely for the spices. Sometimes I add salsa and onions.

Or, you could do sausage with green peppers and onions… yum!

I think one of my crock pot cookbooks has recipes for different kinds of breads that can be cooked inside so you may be able to find those types of recipes on the internet.

Let’s see… pasta salad would be easy. Or how about a yummy homemade chicken salad with grapes, walnuts and chopped Granny Smith apples.

Fettucine Alfredo with or without chicken

Fried potatoes and onions… a Sunday morning favorite.

Hummus with pita triangles and chopped veggies.
