Living Deliberately Strategy: First Triathlon: BABY STEP progress!

Many thanks to the phone calls and emails and comments I got encouraging me on my swim!

Today I swam again but this time I didn’t run or do strength training first. I was fresh and I had a good carb/protein breakfast. I completed all 16 laps across the pool! Some of them with a kickboard, some side stroke, 1 back, 1 breast…but the point was, I made it across, my breaks were shorter, and I didn’t feel like dying :-).

I probably can’t run AND ride after yet but I think I could one or the other. That’s what I’ll try next.

Onward!

The swimming is my biggest challenge. The whole breathing thing….why can’t I hold my breath longer?! :P Good for you keep it up!

Mark, I swam next to the Y coordinator today, who was doing a 500 yd. swim, and was surprised to be keeping a pretty even pace with him! He reminded me that swimming is like cardio with the heart rate and we don’t typically do cardio holding our breath! Made sense to me….Of course, my goal right now is just to consistently get across with a decent stroke. I haven’t even started trying to coordinate breathing! :-)

Oh, do I know the challenge with swimming. But I find it alot easier than running. When Tyler and I were swimming laps recently, I was surprised that he couldn’t keep up as well with mom. There were those pros that swam nearly underwater half the pool, with their goggles, swim caps and all. You know, they dive into the water from the diving boards and just start swimming. Me, I get in the shallow end, hold my nose, and make it to my lane, ducking under each buoy rope thing. So, I guess we all have to start somewhere:-)
