Triathlon Goal

For the latest update in my goal progress, scroll down!

Since it’s December 2007 and my goal is to complete my first sprint-level Triatholon by mid-2009, I thought I’d create a page to chart my progress and goal acheivements.

Goal:

Most of the sprint-level Triatholons I’ve looked at include a 400 yard swim, 13 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run.

Current Status: December 2007

Run: run/walk 2 miles, 4x a week

Swim: not yet

Bike: not yet

First goals:

  • get on a bike!
  • get in a pool and see what my current distance ability is.
  • research what kind of bike I need and set a budget to look for a used one.
  • work up to a 3 mile run/walk
  • get better running shoes
  • establish weekly training schedule
  • chart progress once monthly, or on major accomplisment marks.

Exercise Indoors….

If I can’t get on a REAL bike yet, I have at least been able to use a stationary bike, thanks to a friend’s invite to use a guest pass at her gym. A combo of the treadmill, elipitcal machines, and bike has been great stress relief and I’ve been able to measure where I am…not yet to the point where I can set any kind of goal to work towards yet. When the pool is fixed, if I’m still in this location, I may get to measure my current swim status as well. For now, after a treadmill warm up of 2.5 miles run/walk, I’m doing 10 minutes of level 4 (out of 25) at 16 miles per hour on the bike.

My favorite thing about gym work outs? Music videos and a room full of determined people. Makes for a fun, energizing vibe.

Goal progress, end of December, early January 2008:

  • have not yet riden a bike
  • have not yet swam to check ability
  • have looked a few different styles of bikes; starting to get my head around it; had a great comment on a blog post that was helpful (Joy, I think? thanks!)
  • can handle a 3 mile run/walk though my usual session is not more than 2 miles
  • do not have better shoes yet and MUST get some. My shins hurt!
  • weekly schedule?! Ha! What’s that! I am working out 5x a week and started stregnth training too. But it’s not predictible.
  • here it is, my month chart on progress :-)

So yah, in summary…. get new shoes, get in the water, get on a bike, build endurance, by February be able to cross at least one of these off the list.

Here’s the FEB. 18 Status check:

  1. Triathlon efforts continue. I’ve increased my running to include a 3rd lap of my route. I’ve decided I LOVE the end result of running…the toning, the clear mind, the endurance built. I HATE the process of running! It’s boring as heck. I don’t listen to music because I’m concerned I need to be listening for traffic and safety threats. Lap one means I’m having my “worry appointment” and sorting out all the crud in my life that needs to be chewed. Lap 2 means I’m feeling like puking, wishing I could be in childbirth instead and cussing to the caedance of my footfalls. Lap 3 means the worst is over… some kind of stupid mental and physical hurtle has been crossed…I’m smiling because I’m working on a balinese meditation method and I feel strong. In honesty, I *could* run a fourth lap by that point I’m bored out of my gourd and always head in home. It’s time for a shake up in my routine!!! And, I should actually *measure* my distance because I still don’t really know how far I’m going.
  2. Fortunatley, one is coming! I have a bike!!! It’s not a racing bike but will get me on two wheels and street riding. I’ve got to refurb it and clean it first. It’s impetus enough to get a helmet and a little variety in the work out. I don’t know what to look for in a helmet…any advice?

In short, will be on a bike soon. No chance at water until summer. Still need better shoes. Need to face the truth of how far I’m running instead of guessing…some days optimistically, some days pessimistically.

As of the Ides of March,  I am running/walking/riding; working on distance, endurance, combination, and on not getting knocked blind by renegade butterflies.

I think you’ve got the right idea on the small steps toward your triathlon goal. I am amazed by the people who can say “I’m doing my first triathlon in 3 (or 4) months. That kind of training schedule, when starting from scratch, is brutal. That kind of schedule, with kids, is unthinkable for me.

My goal is triathlon by 40. So, this year is a 5k race, then a 10k, building to a half-marathon at Thanksgiving. I’m also gearing my cycling this spring/summer to ride in a half or metric century this fall.

Next year is full marathon & century. Plus, at some point, I’ll start swim lessons. I can swim for quite a while, but I don’t go very far.

I look forward to following your training - and to being a bit of a long distance cheerleader from time to time.
